The countdown is on – we are now in the single digits of weeks remaining until baby #2 arrives. And as soon as I hit 30 weeks I felt this surge of panic and stress that we have so much to buy, unpack, set up, wash etc. Hubby doesn’t seem as panicked as me but it’s literally keeping me up at night! So I made a list of what we need to sort out and have started plugging away at it, which has helped my stress levels a lot. Oh, hormones…
Today I wanted to share a few of my favourite items with you, some I’ve used with Olivia and some are new to me.
The best thing throughout this pregnancy has been the use of Magnesium oil spray. I suffered leg cramps with my previous pregnancy and around 22 weeks they started again this time. I’d never had leg cramps prior to pregnancy and was surprised just how debilitating they can be! One night I woke up with the blanket stuffed in my mouth, stifling a scream as my calf muscle was protruding from my leg! Some have been so severe I wasn’t been able to walk without pain for 2-3 days after. My acupuncturist sells liniments and oils and I hit her up for some Magnesium spray. Magnesium is better absorbed through the skin (opposed to a oral supplement, which would still be useful) so I rub the spray on my calves twice a day. I’ve had one leg cramp since using the spray and that was after skipping 3 days of the spray. If you suffer with leg cramps, pregnant or not, GET ONTO THIS STUFF! It’s also good to help general sleep issues. You can make your own, or buy it online or at your chemist.
We are having a home birth and I’ve decided to set up a birth alter next to where the birthing pool will be, in our dining area. I will place crystals related to strength, birth, babies (and more), a few select photos, candles, an oracle card, flowers, a few items to represent the elements and anything that Olivia wishes to add to support the birth.
Other items that will be used during the birth include
- essential oils
- homeopathic and herbal remedies
- nourishing snacks
- affirmation cards (these ones are cool)
- a post partum herbal bath (check out Etsy or DIY)
I’ve just bought myself a Chekoh wrap. I also have an Ergo from when Olivia was a baby which I will use but am looking forward to the comfort of a wrap, although I need to practise putting it on before baby arrives. I scored a neutral grey/white striped one. They retail for $85 but there are many second hand ones. Just ensure they are not frayed or torn.
We are a co-sleeping family. We co-slept with Olivia until she was 2 years old. Looking back it was at times unsafe, so this time we have prepared a bit more and set up the Arms Reach Co Sleeper. It’s basically a bassinet with one side that flips down. It attaches to your bed with a strap under the mattress so it’s bumped up level with your bed. Think of it as a bed extender! We did this with Olivia’s cot when she was about 12 months old – the term is called “side car cot”. In the day time baby will either sleep on me, in the wrap, or in the moses basket I picked up second hand to leave in the lounge room.
Other items I love include
- my Medela breast pump. I will likely have an over supply again and pumping some fore-milk off was helpful at times
- WOTNOT wipes are the only wipes we use! Expensive but so worth it – 100% natural, no chlorine, free from sulphates, petrochemicals, parabens, fragrances and preservatives. Olivia not once had a nappy rash as an infant and I put a lot of that down to the types of wipes we used
- amber teething necklace. Obviously for when bub is a bit older, but I do have a lot of faith in these provided you purchase a legitimate necklace (there are many fakes out there!)
I’m sure I’ll have much more to add to this list once baby is here. What are some of your natural lifestyle pregnancy/motherhood products you love?
